Hello Cool English Teachers! 👋
We all know that moment in class: a student is talking about their favorite shoes or a movie they watched, but you can’t quite understand the brand name they are saying. Is it Nike rhyming with "bike"? Is it Disney with a heavy accent?
Brand names are some of the most common words our students use, but they are also some of the hardest to pronounce correctly! Because these brands exist globally, students often use the pronunciation from their native language rather than the English one.
This week, we are fixing that with The Brand Name Game! 🏆
This interactive activity is designed to help your students sound more natural when talking about the companies they love. Here is how the 5-part activity works:
1. Learn 🧠
We start with the basics. In this section, students see the famous logo along with the brand name.
Audio Support: They can hear the correct American English pronunciation.
Phonetics: We provide a simple phonetic spelling (like WOLL-mart).
The "Common Mistake": This is a game-changer! We let students hear the incorrect way people usually say it (like WHALE-mart) so they can hear the difference clearly.
2. Practice 👂
Now that they know the rules, it’s time to train their ears. In the Pronunciation Practice section, students will see a brand (like Samsung) and hear two audio options. They have to select the one that sounds native. This is great for distinguishing between similar vowel sounds.
3. Review Cards 🃏
Before the big game, let’s recap. The Review section offers a clean, flashcard-style interface. Students can click on any logo to flip the card, reveal the text, and hear the audio again. This is perfect for a quick rapid-fire drill with the whole class.
4. Play (Assessment Game) 🎮
Now for the fun part! Split your class into teams for the Assessment Game.
Students pick a number from the grid (1-10).
A brand appears.
If they pronounce it correctly, their team gets a point!
If not, the other team gets a chance to steal.
It’s a high-energy way to test their new knowledge.
5. PDF Resource 📄
Want to take the learning offline? We have included a downloadable PDF packed with extra review materials. You can use this for homework, extra classwork, or pair work practice away from the screen.
Helping students pronounce words like Adobe, Spotify, and Hyundai correctly gives them a huge confidence boost in real-world conversations. We hope you and your students have a blast with this one!
Happy Teaching! 🍎
