Hey everyone, John from Cool English with a new weekly activity. This week I have a fun role-play activity called Language Function Voice Mails. Students train language functions by using speaking prompts. Teachers can adapt it by asking basic level students for only one of the prompts, intermediate level students for 2-3, and advanced level students for all of them.
Ask students to leave a short voice mail within the sixty-second timer. There is a language function (inviting, complaining, scheduling, etc.) and four speaking prompts similar to the IELTS exam.
I use this as an individual activity with students trying a few in class, and then I assign the rest for homework. Sometimes in larger groups, I ask them to roleplay the conversations in pairs instead of leaving a voice message.
It is a simple but effective speaking activity that is great for teaching students the correct phrases to use in real-life situations.
I like to highlight Modal Verbs when going over this to be more polite in their interactions.
John
