Hello, Cool English family! š
One of the most common questions we hear in the ESL classroom is: "Teacher, do I say 'I speak good' or 'I speak well'?"Ā šµāš«
Adjectives and Adverbs are the salt and pepper of the English languageāthey add flavor, but it is soĀ easy to mix them up! That is why this week, we are releasing a massive, all-in-one grammar activity: Adjectives vs. Adverbs.
This isn't just a quiz; it is a complete lesson plan with 8 interactive sectionsĀ plus a printable PDF. Whether you are teaching online or in the classroom, here is how you can use this tool to turn your students into grammar experts. āØ
1. Start with the "Learning Section" š
Before diving into the games, open the Learning Section. We designed this to be a clear, visual reference board. It covers:
The Basics:Ā What they describe (Nouns vs. Verbs).
Placement Rules:Ā Where they go in a sentence.
Exceptions Challenge:Ā Those tricky words that don't change (like fast, hard, and late).
Tips & Tricks:Ā The "-ly" rule and the classic goodĀ vs. wellĀ battle.
š”Ā Tip:Ā Project this on the board and have students take a screenshot or notes before starting the games!
2. Build Confidence with "Which One?" and "Fill in the Blanks" šÆ
Once the rules are clear, warm up with these two sections.
Which One?Ā asks students to identify if a word is an adjective or adverb based on a picture and sentence.
Fill in the BlanksĀ tests their intuition. For example, "The coffee smells [delicious / deliciously]."Ā (Hint: Sense verbs take adjectives! āļø)
3. Become a "Mistake Detective" šµļøāāļø
This is a student favorite! In this mode, students see a sentence with an error, like "You need to listen more careful in class."Ā They have to find and click the mistake. Itās a great way to train their eyes to spot errors in their own writing.
4. "Phrase Builder" & "Video Clip Game" š¬
Now, letās get dynamic!
Phrase Builder:Ā Students unscramble words to build a grammatically correct sentence. This helps them understand word order and placement naturally.
Video Clip Game:Ā We use clips from popular TV shows (like Superstore!) to show real English in action. Students listen and decide the part of speech for the key vocabulary.
5. Get Talking with "Open Questions" š£ļø
Grammar is useless if you don't speak it! This section provides conversation starters like: "What is the most delicious meal you've ever eaten?" or "Do you usually speak loudly or quietly?"
Use these to transition from grammar drills to real conversation.
6. The "Test" & PDF Guide š
Finally, wrap up the class with the TestĀ section to check their score. Need homework? Weāve got you covered. Click the Download PDF GuideĀ button on the main menu. It includes:
Word identification drills.
Multiple choice.
Sentence completion.
Creative writing prompts.
