Hello, Cool English teachers! Welcome back to the blog.
We all know that bringing real-world materials into the ESL classroom is one of the best ways to keep students engaged. That’s why we are so excited to introduce this week’s newest set of activities: Weekly Ads! This week, we are using real weekly advertisements from popular American stores—Aldi, Best Buy, and Target—to help your students practice shopping vocabulary, learn how to ask for prices, and role-play real-life store conversations.
This is a massive, highly interactive set packed with five amazing sections. Here is a quick guide on how best to use them in your classroom!
1. Explore and Reveal 🔍
This is the perfect warm-up and introduction section. Students look at the ads and try to figure out the name of the product and its price.
How to use it: Have students guess the vocabulary word first, then click on the images to reveal the name and the price! You can show them one by one or reveal them all at once. To keep things organized, you can easily jump to different store sections like electronics, household, personal care, and snacks.
2. Find It 🕵️♂️
Ready for a scavenger hunt? In the Find It section, students are given a list of items to look for within the ad.
How to use it: This is a fantastic way to check reading comprehension and ensure they really know the vocabulary. Students read the clues on the left and search the interactive ad to click on the matching item. It turns vocabulary review into a fun game!
3. Price Quiz 💰
Numbers and prices can be tricky for English learners. To help them master this, we built three different mini-games into the Price Quiz section:
What's the Price?: Students see a product and must guess the correct price from three multiple-choice options.
Higher or Lower?: Students look at two products and determine which one is more (or less) expensive. Great for practicing comparative adjectives!
Name That Item!: We give the students a price, and they have to choose which of three items matches that exact cost.
4. Listening Quiz 🎧
Time to practice listening skills! This section features 10 interactive questions.
How to use it: Students will hear an audio prompt asking about the price of an item or asking them to identify what costs a certain amount. They simply click on the correct item on the screen to answer. It’s a highly effective way to review how native speakers say prices out loud.
5. Role-Play 🗣️
We saved one of the best parts for last! The Role-Play section gets students speaking and thinking about real-life shopping scenarios.
How to use it: This section features conversations tailored for all levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students read or listen to the store employee and must choose the most natural, correct response to keep the dialogue going. From asking where to find an item to handling returns, it covers it all!
📄 Bonus: Free PDF Download! As always, we want to make your lesson planning as easy as possible. This set includes a downloadable PDF worksheet that perfectly matches the online activities. It’s ideal for homework, extra in-class writing practice, or a quick assessment.
These Weekly Ads give your students the chance to practice everything from locating items to asking, "How much is this?" Head over to CoolEnglish.org now to try it out with your classes. Happy teaching, and see you next week for more cool updates! 🍎✨
