Hello, teachers! Welcome back to the Cool English blog.
This week, we are updating one of our most popular activities: The News Minute. We have just added 10 brand-new stories to keep your students engaged with current events while practicing reading, listening, and pronunciation.
From a major breakthrough in space exploration to a surprising new trend in artificial intelligence, these new stories cover a wide range of topics guaranteed to spark conversation in your classroom.
If you haven't explored The News Minute yet, it is a multi-level English lesson built around a single short news story. It is packed with interactive tools for both classroom and independent study.
Built-In Multi-Level Flexibility
The core strength of The News Minute is its adaptability. Every single story is available in three distinct levels:
Beginner (A1-A2)
Intermediate (B1-B2)
Advanced (C1-C2)
It is the exact same news story, simply adapted for different proficiency levels. You can instantly toggle between the levels at any time using the buttons at the top of the screen, making it perfect for mixed-ability classrooms.
Inside the Lesson: A Complete Learning Cycle
Here is a quick breakdown of the activities included with every story:
Audio Read-Along: Each text comes with a high-quality native audio recording and a synchronized word highlighter.
Vocabulary Review: Key terms are isolated with simple, clear definitions to prep students before they read.
Interactive Gap Fill: Students can test their listening or reading skills by filling in the missing vocabulary words directly in the text.
The Teleprompter: The text scrolls on the screen just like a real news broadcast, with adjustable speeds (slow, normal, or fast).
Comprehension Quizzes: A quick multiple-choice quiz confirms that students understood the key facts of the article.
Discussion Questions: A dedicated "Discuss" tab provides prompts to transition the class from reading into speaking practice.
Teacher Tip: The Teleprompter makes for an excellent speaking assignment! Assign it using our 14-day homework links, and ask your students to read along like a news anchor, record their reading on their phones, and send the audio file to you for pronunciation feedback.
Extra Teacher Tools
To streamline your lesson planning, we’ve included a few extra tools directly on the dashboard:
Downloadable PDFs: Prefer paper? You can instantly download and print the full lesson.
Focus Mode: Use the full-screen toggle to easily remove visual distractions from the screen.
Adjustable Text: Use the text slider (T) to increase or decrease the font size for your smartboard or projector.
The News Minute is the perfect activity to introduce together in class and then assign as homework. Head over to CoolEnglish.org and check out the 10 newest stories today.
Happy teaching!
